How To Clean Algae-Infested Swimming Pools
You may contact our store staff for more information and guidance.
Cleaning an algae-infested swimming pool requires a systematic approach to ensure the pool is safe, clean, and clear again. Algae can be stubborn and hazardous, but it can be efficiently eradicated with the right steps. Here’s how you can go about it:
Step 1: Balancing the Water Chemistry
Testing the Water
- Using a reliable testing kit, we test the water’s pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. Algae thrive in unbalanced water, so we must adjust these levels. You may bring a water sample to our store in Londonderry for assistance.
- The ideal pH range for pool water is 7.2 to 7.6. If the pH is too high or too low, it can hinder the effectiveness of other pool balancing chemicals we add to combat the algae.
Adjusting the Levels
- If the pH is off, we will adjust it with pH increasers (soda ash) or decrease the pH (muriatic acid).
- Ensure total alkalinity is between 80-120 ppm (parts per million), adjusting with alkalinity increaser (sodium bicarbonate) if necessary.
- Also monitor and adjust the Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels to protect chlorine from UV degradation, ideally between 30-50 ppm.
Step 2: Brushing and Vacuuming
Brushing
- We recommend a pool brush to scrub the walls, floor, and steps thoroughly. Focus on areas with visible algae accumulations. This step helps break up the algae, making it easier for the pool chemicals to target and kill the algae.
Vacuuming
- Thoroughly vacuum the pool to remove the dead algae and other debris.
Step 3: Shocking the Pool
You can use about 1-3 pounds per 10,000 gallons of water, but severe cases might require more. You may apply the shock treatment at dusk or night to avoid UV sunlight diminishing its effectiveness. The pool pump can distribute the shock evenly.
Step 4: Running the Filter
After the shocking process, continuously run the pool’s filtration system for at least 24 hours. This helps to circulate the chemicals thoroughly and filter out dead algae and other particulates from the water.
Step 5: Re-Testing and Re-Balancing Water Chemistry
After the initial 24-hour filtration period, re-test the water. You may also adjust the chemicals to ensure the water chemistry is in the ideal range for a safe swimming environment.
Step 6: Adding Algaecide
Once water chemistry is balanced and the pool is visibly cleaner, you may add quality algaecide to kill the remaining algae and prevent future growth.
Is Algae Dangerous in Swimming Pools?
Swimming in pools with algae isn’t just unappealing; it can pose some health risks. Algae are a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms that can range from totally harmless to somewhat dangerous. Here are some reasons why it’s considered dangerous or at least risky to swim in pools with algae:
- Chemical Imbalance. When algae grow in a pool, it indicates that the water’s chemical balance is off, particularly the sanitizer levels like chlorine or bromine. Low levels of these chemicals fail to keep the pool water clean and safe, allowing not just algae but harmful bacteria and viruses to thrive. Swimming in such chemically imbalanced water can cause infections and illnesses.
- Harmful Microorganisms. Some types of algae can harbor harmful bacteria, including E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which cause skin rashes, ear infections, and more serious health issues if ingested or enter the body through cuts and wounds. There are also concerns about cyanobacteria (often called “blue-green algae”), which produce toxins harmful to humans and animals.
- Increased Accident Risk. Algae can make pool surfaces slippery, increasing the risk of slipping and falling. This is particularly dangerous around pool edges and in shallow areas where children or elderly individuals might walk or enter the pool.
- Poor Visibility. Algae clouds the water, reducing visibility. It can be dangerous as it becomes harder to see if someone is struggling in the water or if there are objects in the pool that swimmers might collide with.
- Allergic Reactions. Some individuals might be allergic to certain types of algae, and exposure could trigger allergic reactions. Although this is less common, it is a potential risk that shouldn’t be overlooked.
